Bangalore being the capital city of the state of Karnataka is the political, social & economic hub of the state. It is the fastest growing city in Asia. According to the 1991 census, the population of is around 4.8 million& is expected to exceed 7 million by 2000. With less than 0.5% area of the state, it is home to nearly 10.5% of its population.
Bangalore is India's fifth largest and its population has almost doubled over the past 10 years. This growth is attributable to economic reforms in India, the city's growing popularity as a software destination and its ability to attract individuals to live and work has been commendable.
Bangalore is not widely dispersed geographically as is the case with Delhi, Mumbai & Calcutta. The population growth & corporate influx that Bangalore has evinced since 1990 is not sustainable by the current infrastructure. Today, the city center faces a serious problem of congestion and over-crowding.
As the city suffers from congestion, almost 20 large developments are located to the north of the city & offer serviced plotted land for residential development. Only a handful of these projects propose to provide an integrated working and living environment designed to international standards.
Historically, the Government of India has taken the initiative to establish institutions like MAC, HMT, ITC, ISRO,HAL, NAl etc., in Bangalore. This thrust has helped the city develop to a hub of information technology, electronics, precision engineering, aerospace, defense research & electrical machinery. In fact, 33 of the top 200 software companies in the country are headquartered in Bangalore.
